Throughout the first 20 years of my marriage, I thought of myself as “the protector”—the knight in shining armor who rescues the damsel in distress, makes all wrongs right, and shelters his family from the dangers of life.  After that first 20 years, I sensed a shift in my self-perception and came to realize that the knight in shining armor only has to be a “part-time” job.  In recent years, I have come to own my vulnerabilities and to realize that playing the role of protector on a 24/7 basis was not good for my physical and mental well-being.  It also stood in the way of my personal growth.  After all, if you cannot admit your frailties, how can you ever overcome them?  In short, I now understand that it’s O.K. to acknowledge that the pressures of being a good father, husband and provider can at times be too much to bear.  When I feel the walls closing in around me, however, I take comfort in knowing that I have a loving and supportive wife who holds a place for me “under her wing” when I am the one who needs comforting and protection.
